Surgical Sexing

Definition: The term "surgical sexing" refers to a veterinary procedure used to determine the sex of monomorphic bird species. During surgical sexing, a veterinarian probes a bird's vent for evidence of either male or female sexual organs. Surgical sexing is an accurate way of determining a bird's gender, and offers instant results. Recently, however, many bird owner are turning to DNA sexing as it offers a safer alternative for determining their bird's sex.
